The Chicken Grows as the Egg Decays

The prevalent sentiment among the sages of Israel today is that the world is currently experiencing the “birth pangs” of the Messiah. Isaiah describes this period “like a pregnant woman close to giving birth, she is in pain, she cries out in her pangs”(26:17). Rabbi Avraham Kook, the first chief Rabbi of Israel explained “When there is a great war in the world, the power of the Mashiach (Messiah) awakens.” The revered Jewish mystic, The Maharal of Prague, explains that in reality these troubles are “the absence before the existence”. While the words of our sages may seem rather esoteric, within them hides the truth and clarity that we all seek to make sense of these trying and turbulent times.

To the naked eye, all seems lost in The Holy Land. While today’s Hitler is tightening the screws on his prized nukes aimed at the Jewish State, the Israeli government seems to be providing the world with an x-rated grand finale, rife with corruption and ungodly alliances. The “invasive kissing” for which the justice minister has been convicted seems rather innocuous compared to the rape for which is the President is being impeached. The Chief of Staff has resigned for his military miscalculation that selling his stocks would secure a victory in Lebanon, and the Prime Minister is too busy accepting bribes to properly prepare the country for the exponentially larger offensive courtesy of the same Hezbollah that he claims to have so thoroughly vanquished. Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt are growing alarmingly vocal in their calls for the destruction of the Jewish State, and Europe is buttering their popcorn for the show. Seems like a rather anticlimactic ending to the epic tale of a Jewish State raised from the ashes of history?

The leaders of today’s Israeli government are not the causes of our troubles; rather they are mere products of the fundamentally flawed philosophy that is the foundation of the modern State of Israel. Founded by a majority of secular Zionists as a vehicle of assimilation among the nations of the world as well as a safe haven to which Jews can flee persecution, the modern State of Israel is a manifestation of these yearnings. Former Supreme Court justice, Louis Brandeis, felt that Jewish nationalism would be “”an attractive substitute for the Jewish religion.” Today, Israeli radio is nearly monopolized by the army radio stations which broadcast predominantly American rap, hip-hop, and boy bands, peppered with an occasionally Hebrew song for good measure. One would struggle to find a popular reality show in the US that does not have a Hebrew twin in the Holy Land, from American Idol to the entrepreneur; if it weren’t for the language you would think you were watching the same show. We hold our own in the fields of domestic violence, prostitution, and crime as well. According to the founders’ logic, we should be card carrying members of the international community by now, commiserating with Dominique de Villepin in Paris about the dreadful fluctuations of the Euro.

We have finally run out of illusions to embrace. Once upon a time, progressive Jews embraced Hellenism, reversing their “barbaric” circumcisions in order to fit in at the gymnasiums, but alas the Greeks have disappeared into the annals of antiquity. Enlightened Jews embraced Marxism, Socialism and Communism – all G-dless attempts at world perfection which history has exposed as flawed and futile. Modern Israel’s history is riddled with quixotic attempts at achieving peace, culminating in our crowning achievement of “The Camp David Accords” brokered by President Jimmy Carter in which we ceded the oil rich and strategically valuable Sinai to Sadat’s Egypt in exchange for peace. Even that has been shattered as Carters book decrying Israel as an “Apartheid State” hits the bestsellers and an Egyptian minister’s exclamation that nothing short of a nuke will “work” with Israel reverberated through the Parliament in Cairo. While searching in vain for a new ideology to embrace, the Israeli public have thrown up their hands at the ballot box, voting for Kadima, the first party in Israel history to proudly declare that they have no ideology at all.

This was not Isaiah’s vision of “A Light unto the Nations”. Israel, the country of G-d’s chosen, represent the Almighty on earth. We are to exude kindness and compassion for the needy, and exact punishment and justice upon the evil. We are to teach the world that the soul within each man is supreme and divine, while the physical is to be conquered and harnessed to perfect the world. As the wise women of Europe are stacking up on burkahs, Muslims are methodically butchering “infidel” throughout the world wisely positioning themselves to attack the enemy who will wanes daily. Deep in the universal subconscious, all of creation is waiting with bated breath for the State of Israel to come to the rescue before it is too late. We have left an empty void that is being filled with the brutality of Islam and only a Jewish State emanating truth and righteousness will have the strength to conquer this burgeoning force.

Within this deteriorating shell known as the government of Israel, a new spirit stirs. As we are immediately surrounded by enemies salivating at the thought of our demise, and the international isolation preceding an inevitable pariah status is beginning to take shape, we have nowhere left to turn. So we look up to the heavens and are see that our answer has been there since the beginning of time. We need no allies in the UN, our ally is the G-d of Israel. Be not deceived, great things are happening in The Land of Israel. The cryptic words of our Rabbis can finally be understood as we see with our own eyes that “The chicken grows as the egg decays”.
